Our solar powered water pumping system being used to pump from a pond to distribute water for wildlife.

Pond Solar Pump

 Updated: 06-16-2014
We attempted to drill a well on a rather difficult Arbuckle formation and opted to use water out of a collection pond we use as a small, but ineffective duck pond.  When dry during the summer after pumping, we will harvest the rich soil and use it on gardens or wallow areas, which will also increase the holding capacity of the pond.  We can also plant some millet if we wanted for forage improvement for ducks.  The half-acre pond catches 100 acres of rainfall and can easily fill up in a day.  Instead of trying to make the well, we will use the solar pump setup to place in the pond and pump up the pasture to some spreader dams that were built in some clayish soils.  We obtained our pump from the folks at Advanced Power, who were great to answer questions and comment on our specific installation.
The pump  is placed in a 5 gallon bucket with rope and float for retrieval via canoe.  The pump can easily pump the 20-30 feet of uphill head pressure and as long as we run 1″ PVC pipe, the resistance of the flow can handle the 750′ of travel distance.  We made one box near the pond to connect the 1/2 inch black pipe from the pump to the PVC and added a backflow preventer to keep the water from flowing back during cloudy periods of the day.  We will have to disconnect the pump during the winter as there is no way in this set up to protect the piping from freezing and blowing the pump due to back pressure.  Small price to pay to get the water up the hill to the future quail oasis locations.
We had an interesting opportunity due to the topography to run the flow in two directions using gravity and a simple inexpensive 9 volt landscape system timer.  We placed the solenoid valve in the box at the top of the hill below the rock overflow which is about 2 feet above.  We set the timer to open for a few hours a day at different times which opens the pipe flowing downhill in the opposite direction.  When the valve closes, the pump pushes the flow back up the rock overflow which is directed the opposite direction.
The valve and landscape timer have been used for over a year in another installation with great reliability.  The two 9 volt batteries have lasted over a year.  For the cost of about $100, the functionality can’t be beaten.    You can order the valve here.
(UPDATE:  The valve just mentioned works well on pressurized systems.  There is almost no pressure created by the solar pump and after installing the Hunter valve, we discovered that the valve wasn’t opening.  After reading the trouble shooting page, we deduced the valve needed pressure, but we needed confirmation.  We had a simple garden hose timer on hand (about $30) to regulate the bird dog misting system and tested it to see if water would flow through it when we held it vertically.  The valve did open with just gravity pressure, so we rebuilt the manifold with the new timer and brass garden hose fittings to connect to the 1″ PVC piping.  Once set we tested the functionality and it works just as designed.  When the timer allows, the valve opens and water refuses to flow uphill to the rock structure and instead flows downhill in the desired direction.  You can order this valve here. )
The installation worked as intended and yields about 3 gallons per minute, enough to saturate the soils over time and allow a diversity of plants for bugging and cooling during the hot summers.

Dear Potential Customer Here's a Little Info about Our Solar Water Pumping Products.

solarpumps.com apiok.com

Advanced Power Inc.

Thank you for your consideration of a solar pump from Advanced Power Inc.  We at Advanced Power are very excited to offer you one of the finest solar water pumps made today!  To our knowledge, we offer the only brushless motor in a solar pump of this style and price range.  A brushless motor means a longer life for your solar pump than brush style motors, and less hassle and maintenance cost for you in the long run.

We have been manufacturing and selling solar pumps for nearly 30 years now and we have always focused on our customers and their needs, and making a better product for them. That is why we worked countless hours and spent thousands of dollars researching and developing this new brushless motor pump technology: to replace the old brush style motors with brushes that would wear out prematurely at times.

We are forever committed to improve the solar water pumping industry.  We pride ourselves in developing and manufacturing some of the best state of the art products on the market, and for having excellent customer service.  We sell systems that make it easy for you to size what you need to do the job your exact situation requires and often times save you thousands of dollars in the process compared to much of the competition.

A few quick tips to remember when sizing our systems to your needs:  The SR4 & RP4 pumps (4 pistons) require a 5 inch or larger casing and flow considerably more water that the SR2 and RP2 pumps.  Almost double the flow with two or three panels.

The SR2 & RP2 pumps(2 pistons) require a 4 inch or larger casing, offer lower flow but are less expensive.  This pump is perfect for small pastures with low grazing capabilities or anywhere less water is needed or if a large enough casing for the SR4and RP4 pump is not available.
The only difference in the SR pump and the RP pump is the warranty and price.
The SR series has a 2 year warranty where the RP series has a 5 year warranty with registration which has 3 full year and a 2 pro-rated.

Our maximum lift with the Advanced Power pumps is 200ft. to the water with any 2 piston pump. (We sell larger pumps up to 320 feet of lift also) We stop our 4 piston pumps at 150ft. of lift. The solar powered well pump can be set as much as 50ft below the static water level.  Lift begins at the water level, not the bottom of the well. So if you have a 200ft. well but water at 150ft. you are only lifting 150ft. no matter where you set your pump below the 150ft. mark. (Referred to in the industry as static head pressure)

The deeper to water in your well, the more low light situations affect the flow rate from the pump, this is one place the multiple panel solar water pumping systems are effective: they are also beneficial if you need more water in a shallow well.  The two and three panel solar pump systems run the motor at a higher rate of speed longer during the day than a single panel for increased pumping volume.  They also spin the motor faster on cloudy days, and early morning and late evening low light times for more water flow.

Our solar powered water pump motors are a variable speed 12.6-40 volt, which means they can run on batteries should low light conditions put the pump behind on its pumping duties. (Requires a minimum of 2-12 volt batteries wired in series for good performance)  You can also use our PODS box (Pump On Demand System) to run the Advanced Power pump from any 110 ac power source such as a generator. (You can see the PODS box on our products page)

We do not have batteries in our standard systems due to maintenance issues, but when needed, they can be used and very beneficial.  Batteries are merely a form of storage as are water tanks so we feel we should sell you a system big enough to pump the required amount of water in a day’s time, and get you to use a large enough storage tank to hold a couple of days worth of storage.  If we do this the animals can get to the storage (water in the tank) instead of it being in a battery.  If you should require a battery system due to a weak well or some other situation: we can help you with that scenario also. If you have a small tank and the system isn't keeping up with your demand, a battery system may be right for you. We recommend the use of the ALC tank level controller if you find yourself in this situation. This keeps the pump shut off when the tank is full and keeps your power in your batteries until it is needed, instead of the pump running needlessly.

It does not hurt the Advanced Power pump to run dry temporarily: so if you have a weak well an Advanced Power pump is the one for you.  Advanced Power solar powered pumps create 85 pounds of pressure so you can run a pipeline or a pressure system.  This also makes them great for remote cabins or homes.

Advanced Power systems are great for rented pastures because they are easy to take with you when your lease is up.  They are also tremendously helpful if you rotate your cattle and have well in other pastures because you can move them easily from well to well in a short amount of time. Advanced Power solar well pumps work great from ponds, rivers or creeks.  (Special* freezing weather requirements must be met in these scenarios as well as filtering the water)

Advanced Power Inc. Solar Powered Water Pump System Replaces Damaged Windmill.
The most commonly asked question about our product is how long does it last?  The solar panels have a 25 year warranty with a 30 to 40 year life expectancy.
Our old brush style pumps “averaged” about three to four years before maintenance was required.  Many lasted 5-10years. With the new brushless motors in our pumps we are hoping to increase the life expectancy considerably.  The Advanced Power pumps are rebuild-able.
We estimate replacement cost to recondition an Advanced Power pump to run between $150.00-$500.00 depending on pump style, and what needs replacing.  Since we haven’t reconditioned many brushless motor pumps yet we are not sure what the cost will be.  The SR4 and RP4’s are more expensive to manufacture therefore they cost a little more to recondition.

Water quality plays a key part in the longevity of the solar well pump’s life, a well that produces a lot of sand may require the optional sand sock that we offer to help screen harmful debris from the pump.  These sand socks are very inexpensive and a great source of insurance against excessive wear and tear on the internal parts of the pumps due to sand and trash in the well.
Sand Sock Filter and 2 Zip Ties

Also the use of the tank water level sensor (ALC) to shut the pump off when the tank is full adds greatly to pump life.  They can increase pump longevity tremendously.

ALC Electronic Tank Level Controller
A proper installation is also a key to increase pump life so please consult your installation manual for complete instructions.
A weep hole in the drop pipe is a must and the pipe going to the tank must drain during freezing weather!

We hang our Advanced Power pumps on ½ inch pipe: usually black roll poly pipe for easy one man installation and service, ¾ inch pipe is acceptable also.
Our Advanced Power solar well pump systems come with the solar modules, aluminum mounting hardware for the modules, a wiring harness and the pump with 100ft. of wire standard. (Additional wire available on request)

The ALC (AdvancedLevel Control) may be purchased additionally if desired.  The ALC is a tank level controller shutting the pump off when the tank is full and turning it on when the water level drops.

We are a family owned and operated business.  We care deeply about your satisfaction, we are farm and ranch raised people in our company, and we know the importance of every dollar it takes to make your operation successful.  We want to treat you the way we would want to be treated and you and your business will always be appreciated.

Please come join the family of satisfied customers that have depended on us for their water pumping needs for over 20 years!
